A pretty, but incomplete and at times inaccurate book. December 31, 2008 My first complaint is that all the pretty photos are not representative of the usual crowd at nudist resorts or beaches. Come on, TNS, get real. I know, TNS is a commercial enterprise--not a non profit association of nudists--so publication of a book full of pretty nudes makes sense if you're in the book selling business. But it certainly doesn't represent the reality of nude recreation.
My second complaint is that while overlooking some very attractive and convenient locations for nude recreation the book details the location of some marginal beaches. I know that it would be impossible to list every place, but it would seem reasonable to use the page budget to describe places that people can get to easily. As an example, in Germany the great public nude beach at the Langenerwaldsee which is about a 10 minute cab ride from Frankfurt Airport is not listed, while some pretty remote and frankly nasty beaches on the Baltic are described at length. How many more people might like to catch a quick nude lake swim between flights at FRA than will trek to the cold rocky beaches of the northern German coast?
Then, there is the flat out hazardous recommendation of some locations that are not really nude-friendly. For example, if you decide to strip off on Okracoke Island, NC, be prepared for a ticket from Mr. Ranger.
It is also worth noting that the editorial integrity of the publication with respect to resorts is questionable. The column inches devoted to a resort is obviously influenced by the size of the ad purchased by the resort.
So, overall, it's a pretty book with some useful information, but should under no circumstances be considered a worthy successor to Lee Baxandall's work. It is not the authoritative guide that it purports to be, and its guidance with respect to any of the beaches should be checked locally before you strip off.
The top book in its field November 18, 2008 A splendid successor to the out-of-print guides to naked places by Lee Baxandall, the current book is full of information, easy to use, stylish, and colorful (that means photos --- lots of 'em). Over 50 countries are covered (or uncovered). Whether you prefer to get naked at a beach, a resort, a campground, hot springs, or a swimming pool, you'll find this guide reliable and not a few times surprising.
Lee Baxandall tried to include every place where nudity seemed to occur. This book is much more selective, presenting locations only if they really seem to be among the best. There are top picks for beginning naturists/nudists: places that are readily accessible, stable, attractive, and hassle-free.
Much other info complements location descriptions: web addresses, phone numbers, directions, bits of history, and various tips. The most information presented refers to nude locations in the USA. Americans will find it very easy to look around their country, and outside it too, for respite and vacations of the naked variety.
This enticing guidebook will get naturist minds really wandering, with their bodies sure to follow!
Terrific Directions November 5, 2008 The two things I like most about this guide book are: 1) the detailed driving and walking directions and 2) with all the false information on the Web, I feel safe disrobing on the beaches listed.
