| Editorial Reviews:
Product Description This book is about the author?s road journey across Afghanistan undertaken in 1969 when the country was a tourist resort for European and American holiday-makers. He talks about his mingling and friendships with the locals and their folkways, manners and mores, weaving his stories with Afghan history, background and interesting, sometimes-amusing episodes of behavior of their kings, tribal chiefs and mullahs. His description of the character of Afghan tribes is aptly written in the following words: ?They fought foreign invaders throughout their history. They fight for survival, they fight for plunder, they fight for ransom, they fight for exacting tribute from foreign armies passing through the Khyber Pass, and they like to retain their independence from foreign control.?

An Insight into Afghan Character & Culture May 2, 2006 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Car Grease for the Camel is a book for the casual reader who would want to learn more about Afghan life-style and culture. It is not about the ongoing war in that country. People now want to read the lighter side of Afghanistan and its people. For those who are new to Afghan history, the author gives a brief introduction about the country's early history and the origins of the Afghan races. The following chapters are fun to read. Some excerpts:
"As in all segregated societies, the Afghan male enjoys gawking at beautiful women, fierce Islamic leanings notwithstanding. Likewise, the Afghan woman makes no pretense of looking at handsome men from behind her veil. If she is smitten by what she sees, she lifts her veil for a brief breathtaking second to catch his eye. Further progress depends upon the ingenuity of the male." This is romance Afghan style. Such amusing episodes are many and very entertaining to read. One can go through the whole book sitting in a cafe, in a plane, at the beach or in bed.
