Thirteen-year-old Annika Gustavssen, immigrated to America in 1882 with her family. Poppa bought Wilderness Hotel, by a huge lake on the American side of the border between Minnesota and Canada, in a small place called Settlement. Annika is small, and very dark. She looks different from the other Swedish children, but she doesn't care. She has the power of "foretelling" and sees the "colors" (auras) of people. She trusts her powers and uses them to guide her. Anniika's family has started a wonderful new life, but all is not well in America.
