The book was in A-1 condition. The content very informative and worth the purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Forget the little stuff   November 19, 2006

I bought the book before my trip in Sept. 2006. There are a few discrepancies, but nothing serious. There are a lot of great hints; like Loc An. I think the volume is coherent and complete. I really like the anecdotal pieces found in the book. I have no complaints and it helped to make my expensive trip to VN a good one.

I have used LP books for a lot of my travels throughout Southeast Asia and usually am pretty satisfied with my experience. This LP book on Vietnam though, does not live up to the standards of other LP travel books!

I lived in Vietnam for three months this past summer. Going through the book, I found out that key details about travel services were missing, maps were wrong, and restaurant recommendations were off the mark. An example of how the book was not up to par: I wanted to plan a trip to Bach Ma National Park while in Hue. Once I arrived, I realized the descriptions of the trails in the book were almost word for word copies of the free trailmap given out to tourist! Nothing new or insightful at all about the descriptions.

I would recommend having this LP book over having nothing, but your better off getting something more reliable.

Happy travels.

4 out of 5 stars "Rather good" rated by evietnamese.net   May 25, 2006

I read Lonely Planet of Vietnam and Korea and I found that it's not bad at all. Don't understand why people around here mostly don't like it. Useful informations, many times updated, rather good.
If you prepare to go to Vietnam, visit this site too: evietnamese.net. There are informations about Vietnam and Vietnamese language.

3 out of 5 stars Beware of border information   April 5, 2006

I used this edition on a bicycle trip across northern Vietnam from Laos to China. The authors confused the new Na Maew/Na Meo crossing between Laos and Vietnam with another crossing farther south. Na Maew/Na Meo is the northernmost international crossing between the two countries, and wasn't described at all. (Note to Lonely Planet: Please restore the UPDATES feature on your website!)

The other problem was that the book reported that a Chinese visa must be issued in Hanoi to use the crossing from Vietnam into China at Dongxing (the crossing near the sea). Not true! I crossed here with a visa issued in Chiang Mai; no problems.

Otherwise the book was useful, but the LP authors need to do a better job of researching.
